Mrs. Knop Mathematics Parkway West High |
Dear Students, Parents and Guests: Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year! It is my privilege to serve you as your “ambassador of mathematics” this term. I hope you find my website informational and useful, even if it doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles! Students: All notes and assignments are posted on this website. This generally solves 60% of most phone calls I receive regarding what work is necessary to be successful in mathematics. In addition, all syllabi and class expectations are available for download regarding each course. Click on your respective class to the left to find out more information! A WORD REGARDING CALCULATORS: For those students enrolled in Algebra Lab , it is highly recommended that you have access to a scientific calculator for use outside the classroom. (Calculators are available to all students during class.) If you do not currently own one, I highly recommend a calculator that has the ability to scroll. Click Here for a list of recommended calculators. For those students enrolled in Honors Algebra 2-Trig, it is highly recommended that you have access to a graphing calculator for use outside the classroom whether it be a handheld device purchased in a store or one online. (Calculators are available to all students during class.) **If you choose to purchase a calculator, we use Texas Instruments (TI) products at West High. You are welcome to purchase other manufacturers of graphing calculators, however, it will be your responsibility to read the user’s manual and know how to use it. The newest TI calculator is the TI NSpire. If this is in your budget, this is the recommended calculator for the future. However, if you already own a TI-83+, TI-84+ or TI-84+ Silver Edition, please DO NOT go out and buy a new calculator! (Perhaps you have it as a hand me down from an older sibling!) Also, because these are now considered “older” calculators, they might be friendlier on the pocketbook. Click Here to see how all of these calculators compare. Any of these calculators listed (for the exception of the TI-89) are perfectly acceptable for class and standardized tests. **If you choose to utilize an online calculator, I encourage you to use the free Geogebra applet. It is very intuitive and user friendly. You can also google "graphing calculator" and many options will come up so pick your favorite. Looking forward to a great year! As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. Proud to be a Longhorn!-RK
