Process

  1. In order for your new society to survive, you need to get organized! Below are links for each of your experts. Each person should complete the work for his or her "expert." This will involve taking notes using the note taking device from a selection of websites listed on each page. Afterwards, return to this page to complete the process.
    • Environmentalist: in charge of reporting on climate conditions and cataloguing natural resources for survival and construction purposes
    • Political Analyst: in charge of leadership and governmental organization
    • Wilderness Guide: in charge of survival skills and salvaging from the wreckage
    • Legislator: in charge of investigating laws and consequences

  2. After taking notes, share your findings with the rest of your group. Determine which information will be most helpful for your society and begin the final products detailed below. Note: Final products must be typed (with the exception of the housing plans) using correct grammar and mechanics.
  3. Write a system of laws and consequences for your island society using what you now know about legal codes from bygone eras. You must include at least three laws for each of the five headings discussed by the Legislator:
    • Loss of Life
    • Other Violent Crimes
    • Theft
    • Property Rights and Damage
    • Neighborly Disputes
  4. Create a survival tips sheet detailing the key skills people would have to learn in order to survive along with how to perform these basic skills. Additionally, write a paragraph indicating how you would divide work in order to meet these survival needs. (Hint: Both the Environmentalist's and the Wilderness Guide's information might be helpful in this task.)
  5. Draw housing plans using the wreckage from the plane and the available natural resources. Label the parts to indicate which resources would be used in each aspect of construction. (Hint: Both the Environmentalist's and the Wilderness Guide's information might be helpful in this task.)
  6. Create an inventory of natural resources that would aid in survival along with an explanation for each (a phrase or sentence to indicate use). Find at least three elements for each category. Consider the following when creating your list:
    • Plant resources
    • Animals
    • Climactic features of the region
  7. Write a job description for the new leader, including leadership qualities needed and the selected system of government. (If you have trouble deciding how to write this, you might consult Monster.com's job description information.) Include and label the following:
    • Key traits desired in the leader
    • Prior experience (if any) preferred
    • A description of the government that the leader will lead (along with how the leader will be selected)
    • A list of responsibilities
  8. Put all materials in a binder or folder with a typed cover sheet detailing the following:
    • Name of new society
    • Group member names and expert roles
    • English II, Hour
