Soccer Coaches

Varsity Coach Annie Wayland

Annie Wayland is the head coach of the varsity girls team and the assistant varsity coach of the boys team at West High. A graduate of Illinois State University, she has an extensive soccer background that includes club soccer in St. Louis (J.B. Marine), long-standing scoring and points records records both at her high school and in the Missouri Valley Conference (ISU), as well as semi-pro experience in Chicago. At Illinois State, she was named First Team All-Conference all four years, Freshman of the Year, Player of the Year, and was recently named to the MVC All-Centennial Team.

 

Varsity Assistant Coach Matt Szarwinski

Matt Szarwinski was born and raised in the St. Louis area.  He played for a variety of club teams in the area.  He attended Francis Howell North High School in St. Charles.  He was a two-year varsity starter for the Knights at marking back/outside midfield.  He then went on to play four years at Quincy, playing marking back/outside mid/defensive mid.  After college, he coached freshman boys’ and girls’ volleyball at Francis Howell High School for four years.  He has coached soccer at Parkway West since 2003.  In his spare time, he also helps train girls in the club J.B. Marine.  He works as a Research Chemist in the Biotech field.  He is married and lives in O’Fallon, MO.

 

Junior Varsity Coach Tom Herpel

Tom Herpel is the junior varsity coach of the boys' and girls' teams at Parkway West. He has played competitive soccer for the majority of his life. During his undergraduate years at Washington University in St. Louis, he coached the Webster Groves High School girls junior varsity team for two years. He is currently teaching Latin at both Parkway West and Parkway North High School.

 

Freshman Coach Michael Skordos

Michael Skordos is the head coach of the varsity boys and freshmen girls soccer teams at Parkway West.   He holds a USSF National Coaching License and coaches his son's U9 boys' team for Panathinaikos FC and GFD (Green Football Development).  He is the tournament director of the Parkway College Showcase which is held annually in April.  Previously, he was the varsity coach at Hazelwood Central High School and Alton Marquette High School.  He is an SSD teacher in the area of social studies at Parkway West.

 

Goalie Coach Brian Jeffords

Brian Jeffords is an Information Technology manager for the Boeing Company. He has over 25 years of playing experience, including four years in Europe for Overijse (Belgian club team). He was a selection for the East region Olympic Development Program camp in 1996. He also founded the Illinois State University club soccer program and served as coach and president for three years. Brian was also a trainer for the ISU women’s team for four years and coached U-12 / U-13 boys club teams. He holds bachelors’ degrees in organizational leadership and business administration from Illinois State University, as well as a master’s degree in business administration from Washington University in St. Louis.

 

Volunteer Coach Deidre Bauer

Deidre Bauer has been playing soccer since she was five years old. She played select soccer for eight years, alternating between JB Marine and Busch Soccer Club. She played on the ODP team for two years, as well as at Oakville Senior High for four years. She continued her soccer career at University of Missouri - St. Louis and currently plays indoor for fun. This will be her second year as a volunteer coach at West High.
