Project Parkway

Subcommitte 3/B/2 Essential Question:
What is the viability of 1 to 1 computing in order to better serve Parkway's students?

9/28/2009: What data will be collected to reveal current reality?

  • What does each high school and middle school currently have in classrooms?
  • What is the current ratio of student to computer at the high school?
  • View student tech demo data from past two years.
  • View teacher tech demo data from last two years.
  • What are the student population projections for the district for the next five years?
  • What are the current funding available and future funds to be allocated for this project?
  • What support is there from staff for such a project?
  • What support is there from parents/guardians for such a project?
  • What training will be needed for staff and students?
  • How will tech support be handled? Spare computers?
  • Information from teachers that have worked in a 1 to 1 environment
  • How has 1 to 1 impacted student computer literacy in other districts?
  • How has 1 to 1 impacted student learning in other districts?
  • How has 1 to 1 impacted student engagement in other districts?

3/1/2010: Key Findings

A. Positive Observations Revealed by the Data
  • The majority of patrons and staff surveyed believe increased access to computers would be beneficial to students.
  • The majority of patrons and staff surveyed believe computers are important educational tools
  • Students use computers in most curricular areas though some curricular areas dictate more of a need for personal computing devices than others.
  • Students see technology (computers and other forms) as vital to their educational success
B. Identified Needs

Other data indicates: 1 to 1 computing has different meanings to different people, concerns over the capabilities of the network being able to fulfill the needs of all users in a 1 to 1 environment, the necessity of a standardized e-mail system for student/teacher collaboration and as a protection for the district network and a way to address equitable access to computers at home for students.

We need a clear definition of 1 to 1 computing. This is based on varied ways other districts nationwide have defined and instituted a 1 to 1 environment. While collecting data it was discovered there are various definitions of 1 to 1 computing and what a 1 to 1 environment would entail. A clear definition of 1 to 1 is necessary to begin to focus the data that is available.

C. (If Necessary) Additional Data Needed
  • Once a definition of 1 to 1 is defined other data will be collected on the following:
  • We will need to insure the network will have the capabilities to handle the large increase in users at any one time. This is based on current numbers of users compared to increased network users in a 1 to 1 environment. The knowledge that increased technology integration will have an impact on network capabilities and performance with or without a 1 to 1 environment
  • We will need a standardized system of communication to monitor and control use of as a safeguard for the network. This is based on discussions with a visit to district that has a 1 to 1 environment and the need for standardization for collaboration. Visit and communication with other districts that have instituted a 1 to 1 environment indicate a need for a standardized system on communication and collaboration.
  • We will need to address the issue of equitable access to computers at home by student in the district. The phone survey indicated access to computers for students at home was inequitable for many.
  • A support structure needs to be in place at each school for supporting a 1 to 1 computing environment (if adopted). This is based on discussions with a visit to district that has a 1 to 1 environment.
  • The need for a curriculum based instruction for technology etiquette in the classroom and other instructional areas. This is based on discussions with a visit to district that has a 1 to 1 environment
