A. Positive Observations Revealed by the Data
  • Parents, teachers, and students feel safe at school and free from physical violence during the school day (80% +) Project Parkway Goal 2 Survey results.
  • Each Parkway School (at each level) has some anti-bullying, anti-violence, and character programming in place Project Parkway Goal 2 Focus Area B Caring, Safe School Environment Survey responses.
  • 85% of parents feel schools are promoting a drug free lifestyle. Project Parkway Goal 2 Parent Survey Results (Winter 2009).
  • 81% of secondary school students feel school promotes safe and drug free lifestyles. Project Parkway Goal 2 Student Survey Results (Secondary. Winter 2009).
  • 61% of teachers feel their schools promote safe and drug free lifestyles. Project Parkway Goal 2 Teacher Survey Results (Elem. & Secondary. Winter 2009.
  • All 5th grade – 8th grade students in Parkway are exposed to a comprehensive Safe and Drug Free Program. Parkway Safe & Drug Free Program Manual (2009).
  • Risk Assessment & Reduction, Safe & Drug Free lifestyle is addressed consistently through the K-8 PE/Health Curriculum. Parkway School District PE & Health Curriculum (OCG).
B. Identified Needs
  • Only about one half of middle school students in Parkway would tell an adult if they knew that somebody at school might get hurt or if they knew about a dangerous problem. Parkway School District Climate Surveys (Elem., Middle, & High School. 2001-2009).
  • Teachers need to be more visible and aware of student actions. Project Parkway Goal 2 Student Survey Results (Secondary. Winter 2009).
  • Of the three focus areas addressed by our subcommittee, Bullying was the number one concern of secondary students. Project Parkway Goal 2 Student Survey Results (Secondary. Winter 2009).
    • 45% of elementary students reported being bullied at school. Project Parkway Goal 2 Student Survey Results (Elementary. Winter 2009).
    • 56% of secondary students reported being bullied at school. Project Parkway Goal 2 Student Survey Results (Secondary. Winter 2009).
  • Bullying is a significant concern to Parkway parents.
    • 47% of parents reported that their child had been the victim of bullying. Project Parkway Goal 2 Parent Survey Results (Winter 2009)
  • Teachers may have a different perspective on bullying in our schools.
    • Only 10% of teachers reported that bullying occurs at school. Project Parkway Goal 2 Teacher Survey Results (Secondary. Winter 2009).
  • There appear to be fewer character and bullying prevention programs at the high school level. Project Parkway Goal 2 Focus Area B Caring, Safe School Environment Survey responses (Elem., Middle, & High School. Fall 2009)
  • Students expressed a need for more programs promoting safe and drug free lifestyle at the secondary level. Project Parkway Goal 2 Student Survey Results (Secondary. Winter 2009).

  • Is the presence of the SRO positive? Is the effectiveness of SRO’s in our schools consistent throughout the district? What makes a good SRO?

  • Are we clearly asking our students about and or addressing drugs in our schools?
  • Are there programs in place in our schools addressing emotional bullying?
  • Are there programs in our schools addressing cyber-bullying and internet safety?
