Project Parkway

Subcommitte 1/A/3 Essential Question:
What is the most effective model for the delivery of the Kindergarten curriculum?

9/28/2009: What data will be collected to reveal current reality?

A survey will be sent to all Parkway Kindergarten teachers to obtain baseline data of our current kindergarten program and to determine professional development for staff.

3/1/2010: Key Findings

A. Positive Observations Revealed by the Data

- The majority of teachers believe the Parkway Kindergarten curriculum document supports a focused learning approach
- The majority of teachers believe the Parkway curriculum is appropriate for Kindergartners

B. Identified Needs

- Some teachers do not have the training to deliver a balanced curriculum in a developmentally appropriate way (profession development is needed for kindergarten teachers and administrators)
- Not enough time to deliver the intended curriculum to all Kindergartners
- Students in half day kindergarten need more time to access all learning experiences
- Lack of equitable resources in all kindergarten classrooms

C. (If Necessary) Additional Data Needed

- Parent survey

D. Comments

- Most neighboring districts only offer full day Kindergarten to meet the needs of young learners and to provide equitable access to education
- Socio-economics in Parkway denies some children the opportunity to attend full day kindergarten
- 21st Century learners need the opportunity to engage in a variety of learning experiences to develop the whole child (social, emotional, academic, and physical)
