  1. I feel the learning principles do not tap into the need for students to become self-advocating and self-directed learners. There should be an additional principle written which states that learners take responsibility for their learning, becoming self-directed, self-advocating, tenacious, and responsible learners.

  2. Last learning principle: I.Q. (intelligence) is fixed...but we can provide for students to stretch as learners, improve as problem-solvers, and develop more complex thought.

How will understanding of the principles be measured or evaluated? Will that be a reflection of the students or teachers or both? What does it look like for students, teachers, and administrators?

Re principle #1: "Standards for success"...will there be a rubric? state standards? district standards?

  4. Under Learning Principals:

A group of middle school teachers were discussing bullet one and one of us felt that a period should be put at the end of 'their learning,' because the rest of the sentence is saying, "do they know my rubric, test taking skills..and she read it as meaning grades. The other teacher felt the word STANDARDS ment... being a work ethic. Work for understanding...Read for understanding. Someone else said should we change STANDARDS to GOALS?

  7. Will the Commitments and Learning Principles listed be measured in the classroom? If so, how?

A suggestion for improvement on the wording of Learning Principles is to combine similar ideas. For example the bullet on self-assessment/reflection can easily be combined with the bullet on feedback. Therefore, a shorter list may be more attainable.

Additionally, we noticed the Vision and Commitments sections include components of teaching the 'whole' child. However, the Learning Principles do not focus on this.

  8. first learning principle - "standards required for success" Whose standards? District standards? State standards? Rubric standards for certain lessons?

3rd learning principle - who defines rigorous?

2nd and 9th learning principles are similar principles and may be combined

7th and 8th learning principles are similar principles

another principle which connects to the vision statement of children become self directed and self learners.
