  1. It is important that the M, V & LPs focus on instruction and learning but what about after school activities such as: sports, drama, band, etc. Should something be stated in the mission to address activities which support individual student interests and contribute to development of a well rounded student. A lot of time and energy goes into supporting these other activities. Although learning occurs in many of these situations, should it be specifically addressed. If it is address, I missed it.

  2. I believe the mission should read: The mission of the Parkway School Distict is to provide a stimulating and worthwhile education that prepares students to be capable, inquisitive and confident learners and leaders who lead fulfilling, productive and responsible lives.

  3. The previous Parkway mission focused on teacher behaviors rather than student outcomes; the current mission and vision do the reverse. The Steering Committee may want to revisit this thinking, as the responsibilities of the academic leader in an accountable school system include promoting a culture of learning for students AND adults. In Schooling by Design (p. 192), Wiggins and McTighe cite several key findings on positive school culture including the presence of: * Core values of collegiality, performance, and improvement that engender quality, achievement, and learning for everyone * Positive beliefs and assumptions about the potential of students and staff to learn and grow and * A strong professional community that uses knowledge, experience, and research to improve practice.

The idea that Parkway schools should be learning communities for both students and adults is a critical, and as yet unnamed, element of Parkways's vision.

  4. I like this last draft!I was happy to see that the vision statement included "always seeking to understand the views, values and CULTURES of others."

I would like to see in the mission statement "...ensure ALL students are capapble..." I do like to the word curious. I think that teachers can foster greater curiosity.

I also noticed that neither the mission, vision, or learning principles include a reference to hiring a diverse set of employees. However, hiring is addressed in the pyramid schematic used to guide the mission discussion(please see Personnel - Hiring, Appraisal, Development). When students see themselves in their teachers, administrators, and others in authority, they are more likely to stay engaged in the learning process.

May I suggest the following wording for the Learning Principles section:

People learn best when they can observe others like themselves in roles of authority, instruction, and leadership. - or - People learn best when they can observe a diverse set of individuals in roles of authority, instruction, and leadership.

    Thank you for your time!

  5. I think the mission should read: The mission of the Parkway School District is to ensure our students are capable, curious and confident learners who are fully prepared for current and future educational challenges. A Parkway education will be rigorous, relevent and worthwhile and will enable our graduates to lead fulfilling, productive and responsible lives in an ever changing and complex world.

  6. Like Mission number 1 the best

Mission number 2 is too long

Mission number 3 feels like a marketing brochure

  7. Mission 3 should read: The mission of the Parkway School District is to develop capable inquisitie and confident learners and leaders who are prepared to understand and respond to the challenges of an ever-changing, world.

  8. On Mission #3 Take out word remarkable Add the word effectively before respond

  9. The new mission statement is good, but it focusses on student response to environment and lacks consideration of their actual individual gifts and potential. I think the learning principles are great. It just bothers me that neither the mission or vision take into consideration of the most important part of their individual learning experiences: development of their individual gifts and potential - along with the exploration of options of investing them into their goals for their futures is overlooked. Thank You!

  10. A few more things: Social competence is key to success. Critical thinking is an essential skill, and I (we) want our students to make positive contributions in the world. Possible Mission Statement: The mission of the Parkway School District community is to ensure that each student is a capable, confident, insatiable learner, a critical thinker, and a socially competent citizen who is prepared to contribute positively in our complex and dynamic world.
