  1. I believe we need to be more explicit in naming our commitment to increasing the number of exceptional DIVERSE faculty and staff. This is an essential cultural commitment that is INTEGRAL to changing the achievement picture in Parkway for the better.

  2. Parkway has done an excellent job with the new Mission, Vision and Learning Principles. I am excited for Parkway students! It looks like in Commitments, Parkway is stating what the adults (teachers, administrators and staff) will do to help students succeed. Very appropriate that Mission and Vision are student-centered and Commitments are adult-centered. On that note, I would like to see a stronger statement about a partnership with parents. You mention a commitment to building positive relationships with parents (bullet #6), but I think it needs to be stronger. The relationships you want to build, whether between students, or with parents, staff and the community are all different, yet very important in their own way. The relationship with parents needs to be a partnership. In partnerships, both sides count on each other. There are expectations and each depends on the other to do their part. I don't have any ideas for the wording, but I think some kind of partnership with parents is necessary to accomplish Mission. Is it unrealistic to expect a commitment from Parkway parents?

  3. Would we want to add language to C#3 that has to do with curriculum "clearly aligned to priority learning targets?"

Would we want to add language to C#9 that says "within and across content areas?" Seems like there needs to be a stronger emphasis on the need to unite efforts across disciplines (at the secondary level in particular) and vertically within disciplines to achieve mission -- the idea that we commit to a belief in the whole as greater than the sum of its parts (synergy). Our progress will be much faster if teacher teams have specific, clearly shared goals and give each other feedback on progress made on a consistent basis (quarterly?).

Would we want to add another commitment that relates to 21st Century Skills? Being a global citizen? Integration of technology into the learning environment to support collaboration, consumption/generation of knowledge and ideas, and increasing students' self-direction?

Seems like a next step would be for all departments and functions throughout the district to clarify with concrete examples what these commitments would actually look like in their area.

  4. replace: Parkway School District will "nurture an appreciation of the role the arts play in our lives and culture" -(appreciation is hard to measure)

with: Parkway School District will support the development of cultural literacy and self expression, represented in the fine arts or modern languages for its students.

  5. "Responsible stewards of the resources provide by the local community, state and federal government" or "Financially prudent with its revenues, never losing sight of the need to return value to the taxpayers by providing an educational opportunity that is desired for the children of prospective residents to the community"

    Submitted: 4/21/10

  6. I would like to see a commitment regarding fiscal responsibility to our taxpayers. Maybe something like, "Operate efficiently and demonstrate fiscal responsibility to the greater community."
