A Grain of Sand

There’s a grain of sand
That lays upon the hot, dry land
But not all alone there are many more
Millions, billions, and trillions, upon the shore
Waiting to be moved by wind, rain, or sea
Or even, just maybe, by she
Even hours after she’s there, on the warm sunny beach
The sand will have been moved, all that sand what was in her reach
Maybe by the waves or someone else’s feet
Or blown on a breeze onto a street
Those grains have been touched by hands
Here and even on distant lands
Made into sand castles and forts
And other designs for pleasure and sports
The girl is walking upon that warm, white sand
Making footprints with every step and
The waves slowly wash them away
Moving them more a little each day
But the girl is still there watching the ocean
White crashing waves in motion
The sun is moving across the sky
Higher and lower as the hours pass by
Everything is moving, not staying the same
Everything is different from when she first came
She’s all the remains, the one unchanging part
The people, the water, the sand, not the same from the start
She’s lost and all alone
Other then the sea breeze and a gull she’s on her own
The sand left her behind
It’s changing places on her mind
Picking it up and pouring it through her hand
She wanted to fly and be free, like that grain of sand
