PTO Executive Board Meeting
April 10, 2012

Those present:  Jane Thal, Ann Fingerhood, Laurie Hartig, Lynn Lundstrom,
 Daria Reidel, Jenny Marquart and Madeline Zwikelmaier.

The meeting was called to order in the Conference Room at 5:58pm.  The minutes of the Feb., 27th Meeting were approved as corrected.

Parent to Parent- Ann Fingerhood presented the Program Evaluations from the last Parent to Parent Meeting. (Having a Productive Summer.) The meeting was well received and there were some suggestions that will be taken in to consideration for next year. Ann and Daria will hand out Evaluations this evening at our Parent to Parent Meeting (Safety-The Three D’s-Drinking, Driving and Drugs.)

Financials-Jane Thal presented the financials for February and March. There were no unusual expenses.  March was very slow due to Spring Break. The total for Viking Pride Fund is $8,097 which includes Matching Funds we have received. The Ending Cash Balance was $12,307.  Jane reported that even though is unlikely we will meet our Fundraising Goal, we will have money to cover our expenses and will have money left over; over and above what is to be held in reserve for the next school year.

Principal’s Report-Jenny Marquart reported that the upcoming EOC’s (End of Course Exams) will be in Algebra I, Biology, English II and Gov’t.  The number of EOC’s will be increasing.   Next year the number will increase to 6-7.  The current 6th graders may also have to take an EOHS exam (End of High School Exam) during their Senior Year for school assessment but not as a requirement of graduation. State Testing for Tech Classes- Business, Tech Ed., and Family and Consumer Sciences will be held during Ac Lab.  Also the ACT Test will be given at North for Juniors on April 24th.

There was a discussion about the Honors Evening that will be held on May 3rd.
Letters will be sent out to parent/students if they are being honored. After discussion Jenny said she will alter the letters to specifically state in advance what Award the student would be getting-Senior Certificate, Department Award or Presidential Certification etc...  Hopefully this will avert any bad feelings about students expecting a certain award and feeling awkward and hurt if they did not.

Summer School will be held at North from June 4-July6th.  It will only be North Students this year.  The fee for K-8 has been raised to $25 but the High School Classes are still free.  Also, Kevin Beckner, Assistant Principal from NEMS has been moved to Coordinator of Assessments for the District.  There is no word yet if his old job will be filled.

There are several retirees at the end of the school year: Sarah Berk (French),                                                                                                                                                 Paul Reinisch (Science) and Joe Ragenbogen (History), Dite Totarsky (Lib. Sci. Sec’y) and Sharon Haseltine (Communication Arts Sec’y).  A new French teacher will be hired, but other jobs will be lost to Budgetary Cuts/Attrition.  The Student Enrollment Projects for North for the 2012-2013 year are down, so non-essential jobs will not be refilled.

Old Business-The Blood Drive was held on Monday, April 9th.  There was some problems with volunteers (both students and parents) not showing up to work. Roughly 150 students gave blood. Perhaps the day after Easter Holiday was not a good time to schedule a blood drive. This will be mentioned to the NHS Coordinator for next year.

The Staff Appreciation Lunch will be scheduled for May 22nd. The PTO will cater all of the food for the Luncheon and not ask for volunteer donations of desserts.  The costs of this luncheon will be higher than initially budget, but we will have a more realistic budget number for next year.

There were 29 Applications for the North High PTO Scholarship. The top 10 were selected and interview scheduled.  The committee had trouble getting volunteers for the selection committee.  It was suggested that since the award honors student work in the Parkway Community, maybe we could have some non-parents community members, or past North parents on the committee.  This will considered for next year.

The Last Board Meeting of the 2011-2012 school year will be on May 9, 2012 at 5:30pm at McAlister’s Deli.
