Counselors' Corner

FRESHMEN CLASS OF 2014

In January, counselors met with freshman students to review their transcripts and to plan next year’s schedules. Together, they checked the schedule in Infinite Campus and made any corrections that were necessary. Counselors reminded students that they could be enrolled in any course listed on their Official Course Request (OCR) forms; therefore, it was important that they listed classes in which they were interested.

Freshmen have received their first semester grades. Students who would like to improve their grades have several options available:

-meet with their teachers before or after school

-meet with their teachers during Academic Lab, 6th block on B days

-go to the curriculum learning center and work with one or more of the tutors

-request assistance from a National Honor Society student

Students are able to track their assignments and test scores in Infinite Campus. This program provides an opportunity for students to monitor their grades and determine what they need to do in order to earn the best grades possible. Colleges and universities will use the first six semesters of high school grades in order to determine admission. Freshmen have five more semesters to improve their grades.

This program provides an opportunity for students to monitor their grades and determine what they need to do in order to earn the best grades possible. Colleges and universities will use the first six semesters of high school grades in order to determine admission. Sophomores have three more semesters to improve their grades.

Sophomore year is a good time for students to explore career and/or college opportunities. The information obtained from the PLAN and PSAT can be helpful to students as they consider their post-secondary plans. In addition, the Family Connections/Naviance program provides information regarding colleges and careers. Students are encouraged to discuss their future plans with their counselors and parents.

JUNIOR CLASS OF 2012

In January, counselors met with junior students to review their transcripts and to plan next year’s schedules. Together, they checked the schedule in Infinite Campus and made any corrections that were necessary. Counselors reminded students that they could be enrolled in any course listed on their Official Course Request (OCR) forms; therefore, it was important that they listed classes in which they were interested.

During February, juniors should be considering their post-secondary plans. Spring of junior year is a good time to begin visiting colleges, universities and technical schools. Students interested in the military need to be discussing their options with parents and recruiters. Juniors are also encouraged to meet with their counselors to help plan for the future. In addition, the Family Connections/Naviance program provides valuable information for college and career exploration.

Students are able to track their assignments and test scores in Infinite Campus. This program provides an opportunity for students to learn to take responsibility for their education and to self-advocate. These skills will serve them well throughout their high school years and into college.

SENIOR CLASS OF 2011

Success in college is highly correlated to students’ senior year schedules and grades. Seniors need to continue staying focused on earning the best grades possible. The best caveat is to avoid senioritis!

Most students have completed their college admission paperwork and are now waiting to hear where they have been accepted. As students receive communication from the colleges and universities, they need to communicate the results to Mrs. Gatti in the Guidance Department. She tracks the places where North High students are accepted. This information is important for future students.

Scholarship opportunities are listed on the Naviance/Family Connection program. Students or parents can obtain this information by going to the Guidance section on the North High website and click on the Family Connections box. Students can log in using their own user name and password (if they have forgotten their passwords, there are a number of staff members in guidance who can assist students in resetting their passwords) or parents can sign on as a guest. Although the majority of scholarship money available to students is provided by the colleges and universities, there are also opportunities for one-time scholarship awards that are offered by local and national businesses and organizations. North High students have been very industrious in the past with applying for and receiving many of these scholarships.
