Fifteen Parkway students are summer STARS

For academically talented high school juniors and seniors, summer affords a chance to research everything from neural circuits in the brain to computer aided drug design to the development of new catalysts systems based on ruthenium and iron during the 2011 STARS program, hosted by the University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL).

For six weeks, biologists, chemists, engineers, medical researchers, psychologists and public health experts from Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Saint Louis University, Solae, Washington University, and UMSL take on student apprentices in laboratory settings and direct students in research projects.

This year’s program, “Experiencing the Scientific Enterprise,” was held June 6 through July 15 at UMSL.  Students conducted research and presented papers, took part in career workshops and attended lectures by leading St. Louis area scientists.

Participants in the program included 79 students from 36 high schools in the St. Louis metro area. Parkway students in the 2011 STARS program were:

Central High: Layla Foroughi, Shawn He, Belle Perez, Chris Wang, Denise Zhu
North High: Rico Beuford, Manali Gokhale, Taylor Voelker
South High: Yingjie Fu, Tharun Kotaru, Isha Pathak, Connie Shen
