McKelvey Elementary is one of 182 schools across Missouri honored

Parkway’s McKelvey Elementary School was one of 182 Missouri public schools honored June 7 by state education officials for their successful adoption and implementation of “positive behavior support,” a comprehensive approach to improving students’ behavior and academic performance.

McKelvey received the bronze award during the fifth annual Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support Summer Institute, sponsored by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the University of Missouri Center for Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support. More than 1,000 educators from school districts and charter schools throughout Missouri attended this year’s conference, in Columbia.

The awards were presented by Heidi Atkins Lieberman, assistant commissioner of the DESE Office of Special Education.  The gold, silver and bronze awards represent the extent of each school’s implementation of PBS strategies and the evidence they have compiled about the program’s impact in each school.

Schoolwide “PBS” is a systematic approach to creating safer and more effective schools by structuring the learning environment to support the academic and social success of all students.  It focuses on encouraging positive student behavior, preventing disruptive behavior and tailoring academic strategies to individual student’s needs.
