Excessive Student Absences
Each school will implement the following procedures whereby parents/guardians are notified of student unexcused absences and/or excessive absences/tardies.
- When a student is absent for five (5) days, the attendance secretary notifies the principal or principal’s designee and the social worker or social worker intern. The principal sends a letter communicating the absences. (See Attachment A)
- When a student is absent for ten (10) days, the attendance secretary notifies the principal or principal’s designee and the social worker or social worker intern. The principal sends a second letter communicating the absences. (See Attachment B)
When the social worker is required to attend court because of an Educational Neglect charge, he/she will need to take a printout of student absences from IC and a copy of Parkway’s Student Attendance Policy. Reasons for the absence must be recorded in order for the court to act on the neglect charge.
Students who are absent for ten (10) or more days will be immediately withdrawn if the student is on vacation only. This rule does not apply if student is ill, not sure where student is attending, etc. The attendance secretary will inform the district area registrars if student is going to be absent for ten (10) or more days due to vacation, so that the student may be withdrawn. If student is going to be absent for a long period of time due to illness, student may be eligible for “Homebound” instruction. The attendance secretary will notify the counselor in these instances.
