Two Parkway students receive State Citizenship Award

Alison Levens (left)  from Central High and Jacob Lyonfields (right) of West High were among 15 public high school students recently honored by the State Board of Education as recipients of the 2010 Outstanding Achievement in Citizenship Award.   They were formally recognized during a luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City.
The award was established by the Missouri Legislature in 1989 and first given in 1990. With assistance and financial support from The Missouri Bar, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education presents the award annually.
Every public high school is eligible to nominate one senior for the award.  Students are selected on the basis of their academic achievement in civics and government courses, participation in civic and government-related extracurricular activities, and exemplary community service.  Candidates also must submit an essay on the importance of citizenship.
A committee of educators and members of The Missouri Bar’s Advisory Committee on Citizenship Education selected the winners.
The awards will be presented by H.A. “Skip” Walther, president of The Missouri Bar; David Liechti, president of the State Board of Education; and Commissioner of Education Chris
L. Nicastro.
