Game Changer

nasa logoFifth-graders in Parkway’s MOSAICS academy at Pierremont Elementary School have reason to brag. A game they designed exclusively for astronauts is the winning entry in NASA’s national contest, “Spaced Out Sports Design Challenge.”

Fifth- through eighth-graders competed in the contest, which requires students to apply Newton’s laws of motion to design games for astronauts to play in space. Astronauts need a way to help maintain their physical condition in a microgravity environment, and games achieve that end.

MOSAICS gamers“Starfield,”  Parkway’s winning game, requires astronauts to maneuver through an obstacle course known as the starfield to collect “power stars.” The astronauts then throw their collected stars at a black hole target.  Click here to see Parkway students demonstrate the process in this YouTube video.

A NASA team will visit the MOSAICS Academy at Pierremont May 7 to congratulate the students. The visit will also feature science learning stations geared for the elementary level.
