Board of Education Votes to Place Tax Rate Increase on November Ballot

At its June 21 meeting, the Parkway Board of Education voted unanimously to place a 37-cent tax rate increase on the November 7, 2006 election ballot to address financial challenges facing the district. Revenue from the tax increase would be used for the following purposes: - Lowering elementary class sizes and decreasing student-teacher ratios at secondary school levels; - Strengthening academic achievement with a focus on the basics and student success; - Updating textbooks, technology and instructional equipment; and - Maintaining financial security through 2014 by reducing operating deficits caused by state funding freezes, declining VST enrollment, limited new construction in the community and inflation. If the 37-cent tax rate increase is approved by Parkway voters, it would mean an increase of approximately $140 per year (or $12 per month) for the owner of a home appraised at $200,000.
