Parkway Students Win in Poetry, Geography

Two students from Parkway Central Middle placed first and and second in the Missouri State Poetry Society contest. Two other Parkway students, one from Central Middle, the other from Southwest Middle, qualified as  semifinalists  in the upcoming 2011 Missouri Geographic Bee.

Under the guidance of communications arts teacher, Katelin Moquin, seventh-grade students Jessica Randall and Faisal Al Shurafa placed  first and second, respectively, in the Missouri State Poetry Society Contest.

Two students,  Elena Bernstein and Sam Schaeffer, also received honorable mentions.

These students’ poems will represent Missouri in the Manningham Trust Student Poetry Contest, a national contest sponsored by the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. This is the second year Parkway Central Middle students have earned honors.  Last year, Clayton O’Hanlon, now an eighth-grader, placed third at the national level.

In the 2011 Missouri Geographic Bee, Ben Morgan, a seventh-grader at Parkway Central Middle School, and Claire Berendzen from Parkway Southwest Middle,
qualified as semifinalists.  Ben had one of the top 100 scores in Missouri and will compete at the state level on Friday, April 1, 2011. The 2011 Missouri Geographic Bee will be held on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. The Missouri state winner will go on to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Geographic Bee.
