Math + Swimming + Baseball + Vacation = Summer 2008

Close to 200 middle school students from all over the St. Louis area are attending a unique summer program – the Summer Math Academy. The Summer Math Academy targets aspiring middle school mathematicians, and is a partnership between the Parkway School District and St. Louis Public Schools. The Math Academy started on June 16 for the teachers and kicked off Monday, June 23 for students.
Program funding is a result of a three-year $1.5 million grant from the U. S. Department of Education to focus on middle school mathematics instruction. The goal of the program is two-fold: to improve achievement in middle school mathematics by developing teaching strategies that effectively develop student understanding of mathematics; and to package and share those strategies with others. Additional partners in the grant include Maryville University faculty, and several nationally known professional consultants in the fields of mathematics education and program evaluation.
The “Mathematicians in Residence” grant provides a three-week summer program each year in which up to 84 mathematics teachers receive intensive professional development, mentoring and coaching that they apply in classroom settings with middle school students (entering sixth, seventh, and eighth grades) from participating districts.
This program is one of only five math science partnership federal grant recipients in Missouri, and one of 50 in the nation. It is the only project that includes both teacher development and immediate application with students from diverse backgrounds. This program is the only one in the nation that brings together the unique partnership of higher education, city, suburban and private sector entities, creating a rich diversity in both teacher and student participants.
This summer 33 teachers and 173 students are registered. Students and teachers are from the Parkway School District, St. Louis Public Schools and private schools.
