Letter to Parkway Parents Concerning Availability of Flumist Vaccine

Parkway School District is able to offer the Flumist™ Nasal Vaccine to our students through a program from Unity Pharmacy (St. John’s Mercy Medical Center). With less vaccine this year, the flu virus could spread more easily therefore getting the healthy population vaccinated would be a good step. Not only are vaccinated individuals less likely to miss work, school etc. but they are less likely to pass the flu virus on to other people, including those high risk patients who have not been able to obtain a flu vaccination.
  • The nasal vaccine at this time can only be used in healthy individuals, ages 5 through 49 years that do not have chronic diseases such as asthma, kidney disease, cancer, HIV, AIDS and other conditions as listed on the Flumist vaccination consent form. (See attached).
  • The nasal vaccine contains the same strains of flu as the injection but in a live, weakened nasal form. The influenza flu virus is picked up primarily by the nasal passages and the nasal vaccine mimics this process. The nasal vaccine does not cause the flu.
  • The most common adverse reactions have been a runny nose/nasal congestion, headache, sore throat. It has been our experience that the most common side effect is a stuffy nose on the day following the vaccine and this has been very limited.
  • People that receive Flumist™ should not be exposed to others that are severely immunocompromised.
