Parkway Students to be Honored with Spirit of Excellence Awards

Nearly 300 Parkway School District students will be honored during the district’s annual “Spirit of Excellence” awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening (March 17) at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Spirit of Excellence awards celebrate African-American achievement in Parkway schools. This is the fifth year for the program, which honors students of all ages for a variety of achievements. The “Academic Excellence” award honors high school and middle school students who have earned a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or higher. Secondary students are also honored with the “Excellence in Arts” and the “Dedication to School and/or Community” awards, as chosen by their schools. Elementary students are chosen by their schools to receive the “Reaching for the Stars” award. The evening’s program will open with the song “Lift Every Voice,” sung by Parkway faculty and staff members. Student entertainment includes the Central High Steppers and the SistaKeepers from Central High and West Middle. Parkway superintendent Dr. Robert Malito will congratulate the honorees in the evening’s opening remarks.
