Parkway Dominates Regional Vocabulary Competition

Twelve Parkway students qualified to participate in a war of words on November 29, and two West High students took first and third place.
The National Vocabulary Championship (NVC), sponsored by the Princeton Review, featured the top 88 vocabulary students from nearly 40 area high schools in the region who competed for money toward college and an opportunity to advance to the NVC finals.
Parkway students dominated in the competition, holding 7 of 10 places in the second round and four of five in the final round.
Rajiv Tarigopula of West High, won first place and a check for $5,000 towards a “529” higher education savings plan. Stephanie Connolly, also of West High, took third place winning the Encyclopedia Britannica’s 2008 Ultimate Reference Suite DVD as well as books and services from The Princeton Review.
Tarigopula sealed his victory in the third and final round of competition by correctly identifying “belie” as the synonym of “misrepresent” from the following sentence: “Eliza’s letters to Victor abound with hackneyed, platitudinous bromides that belie her perspicacity and her forte for witty badinage.”
Tarigopula will advance to compete in the NVC finals in Los Angeles on March 10, 2008. He will go head-to-head with 49 other top scoring students from the 90,000 whom participated throughout the country.
“Our teachers are so proud of the way our kids comported themselves with class while rising to the top with their talent. What an evening! We had a chance to celebrate words and kids, and, for a communication arts teacher, it doesn't get any better than that,” said Mike Hopkins, competition coach and Parkway South High teacher.
The following Parkway students qualified for the competition:

Central - Will Hack, Joy Hi and William Sun (coach Jason Lovera)
North - Jenny Bower, Shellie (Michelle) Kreter, and Punit Vachharajani (coach LuAnn Fallahi)
South - Kelli Dennehy, Tim Hassett and Laura Maguire (coach Mike Hopkins)
West - Stephanie Connolly, Marilyn Piccirillo and Rajiv Tarigopula (coach Jeff Dee)
Clips of the event will be shown later this month on CCIN Charter cable channel 3.
