Elementary Schools Raise Thousands for Charities

Craig Elementary Students Raise Thousands for American Heart Association On the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 12, students from Craig Elementary School in Parkway presented the American Heart Association with a check for $7,436.12. The students raised the money through pledges and donations they received for their participation in the "Jump Rope for Heart" event. This was only the second year that Craig has participated in the event, and in two years they have raised a total of over $13,000. At an all-school assembly, jump-ropers from each grade put on an exhibition and an American Heart Association representative thanked the students for their generosity. Tsunami Relief Drive Brings in Over $2,000 at McKelvey Elementary Students at McKelvey Elementary in Parkway have raised over $2,000 that will be donated to Unicef for Tsunami relief. They raised the money through a student council raffle in which tickets cost only 25 cents and each student had a hand in creating the grand prize. The project's theme is "We're All Tied Together," and each grade level made a special blanket that was raffled at a school assembly. Each student in the school tied a knot in the fringe of his or her grade level's blanket, relating to the theme. The project has special meaning for McKelvey's student population, which was ranked as St. Louis' 10th most diverse elementary school population in a Spring, 2004 newspaper article.
