Our Speller makes it to National Spelling Bee in D.C.

The amazing Claymont speller, Gokul Venkatachalam, performed very well in the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. Gokul advanced to Round 6 of the semifinals and is among the top 50 spellers in the country.

Gokul was one word from making the finals, but left out the “h” from kahikatea, which is a New Zealand evergreen tree.

Some of the words Gokul correctly spelled are:

  • Quotidian - means ordinary

  • Widdershins - an adverb that means in a wrong or contrary direction

  • Southerrain - the word that archaeologists use for an underground structure associated with the Iron Age.

He just completed fifth grade at Claymont and is heading to West Middle next year.
