Governor, Governor! Parkway South Student Twice Elected Governor; Appointed by Gov. Blunt to Missouri Commission

Joshua T. (Josh) Travis, 17, of Manchester, is passionate about civics and government. With his election in June as Governor of the 68th session of The American Legion Boys State of Missouri, he has earned his second title this year as "Governor Travis." Travis was first elected governor at the Missouri YMCA Youth in Government program last winter in Jefferson City.

The Missouri Boys State program, sponsored by the Missouri American Legion, selects only young men who distinguish themselves as leaders in their high schools and communities to participate in this statewide citizenship and leadership training program. More than 900 boys attended this year's session. Travis, the Nationalist Party nominee, won the statewide election in a landslide, capturing 74 percent of the vote. Travis was sponsored by American Legion Post 208 in Manchester.

Travis was also recently appointed by Missouri Governor Matt Blunt to the Missouri Community Service Commission, a body which is designed to strengthen Missouri communities through volunteerism and service. Josh's appointment to the age 16-25 slot is subject to Senate confirmation for a term ending on Dec. 15, 2008.

"In addition to being well grounded and hard working, Josh has a tremendous talent for making connections and bringing people together. His election to these leadership positions is a reflection of his commitment and potential for a future in politics," said Gary Mazzola, Parkway South High principal.

Josh will be a senior at Parkway South High where he is the Delegation Leader for South High's Youth in Government (YIG) program, a member of the National Honor Society, National Forensic League and the Boy Scouts of America.
