2005 Art Show to Feature Commemorative Anniversary Piece

This year's Parkway All-District Art Show will feature a special commemorative piece created by Parkway art teacher Jim Saale in celebration of the district's 50th Anniversary. Saale hand carved the piece into a large piece of African black mahogany wood. The centerpiece of the carving is the district's 50th Anniversary logo, which has been displayed prominently during the anniversary year. The likeness of every Parkway superintendent is featured, as well as 72 other figures who represent members of the vast Parkway family. Principals, board members, teachers, support staff and students are shown taking part in various activities. Twenty-six organizations associated with Parkway and the surrounding community are featured, as well as 125 ivy leaves, expressing the academic goals of the district. Beneath the anniversary logo is a compass which marks the location of each Parkway school. Saale worked on the piece for 10 months, collecting materials and tools, making detailed drawings and designing the piece at first. Carving took over six months, as he worked three hours a day for three to five days at a time, then resting for only a day to rest his carving hand. He often worked 14 hours straight on a weekend or holiday. Saale says that creating the piece was "a labor of love." Those in the Parkway community will also certainly love the opportunity to see this incredible piece of art. Saale's carving will be on display at the Parkway All-District art show. The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 8 at the Greensfelder Recreation Center at Queeny Park. It is free and open to the public.
