Parkway Students Awarded College-Sponsored Merit Scholarships

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced today that eight Parkway seniors have been awarded College-sponsored Merit Scholarships. The Parkway honorees are among more than 2,600 winners nationwide. The scholarship recipients are, from Central High: Karen Blaha, Pamela Corder and Kristin Standley; from North High: Mikhail Panchenko and David Phillips; from South High: Eric Kim and Ian Ross; and from West High: Catherine Royal. Each winner is awarded a scholarship in the amount of $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study. Officials of each sponsor college selected winners of its scholarships from among finalists in the nationwide competition who plan to attend their institution. These winners were among the over 1.3 million students who entered the 2004 Merit Scholarship competition when they took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 15,000 students eventually moved to the finalist level, the group from which all Merit Scholarship winners are chosen.
