Board Adopts 2007-2008 School Calendar

On Wednesday, May 24, the Parkway Board of Education voted to adopt the 2007-2008 school calendar that will include completion of final exams before winter break and a start date of August 13. Director of middle school education Mary Muckler, who presented the calendar, reported that she and members of the calendar committee had reviewed the feedback from some 400 individuals. That feedback was largely supportive of having finals before the break, but at the same time showed concern about the August 13 start date being too early. Due to the complex nature of developing a calendar that takes into consideration the many factors outlined below, it was virtually impossible in 2007-2008 to accomplish a later start date yet finish finals in December. Therefore, the committee recommended and the board approved the 2007-2008 school calendar with the following key dates: First day of school: Mon., Aug. 13, 2007 (starting 3 days earlier than Aug. 2006) Final exams: Wed., Dec. 19 through Fri., Dec. 21, 2007 Winter break: Mon., Dec. 24, 2007 through Fri., Jan. 4, 2008 Spring break: Mon., March 17 through Fri., March 21, 2008 Last day of school: May 21, 22 or 23, 2008, depending on snow days used The Board asked administrators to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of the new calendar and explore options that might allow school to begin somewhat later in future years.
