Three West High seniors are state champs in speech & debate

In the recent Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Speech and Debate Championships, Parkway West High students took first place in two events.

(l. to r.) Annie Schuver, Megan Hornsby and Maggie Thomas

Seniors Megan Hornsby and Maggie Thomas won the policy debate competition and junior Annie Schuver won the original oratory contest. All three also qualified to compete at the national tournament this summer.

The policy debate topic was whether or not the U.S. Government should substantially increase exploration and/or development of space beyond Earth’s mesosphere.

Schuver's oratory topic was about complacency and how we have become so comfortable in our own lives that we do not see nor help many of the problems in the world around us.

West High has won 11 state championships in speech and debate since 1974. This year’s teams were coached to victory by West High English, Speech and Debate Teacher Cara Hurst.
