Three Parkway Seniors Awarded National Merit Scholarships

Three Parkway students are among the 2,500 high school seniors nationwide who have won National Merit $2,500 scholarships. These designees were chosen from the group of approximately 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2004 National Merit Scholarship Program. The Parkway winners are Stephanie Doerries, senior at Parkway South High; Sean Harris, senior at Parkway West High; and Anant Vinjamoori, senior at Parkway Central High. Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The scholarship selection committee evaluated each finalist's academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay describing interests and goals; and the recommendation by a high school official. Competition for these scholarships began in October 2002, when over 1.3 million high school students took the preliminary qualifying tests.
