Central High Music Program Named by GRAMMY Foundation

Parkway Central Highs music program was named one of forty-two GRAMMY Signature Schools by the GRAMMY Foundation as part of a nationwide competition. Central High was selected on the basis of a scoring system applied by top music educators and professionals. The music department will receive a customary award and a $1,000 grant to be applied to the music department budget. This is Central High's second recognition by the GRAMMY Foundation as a Signature School. Doug Hoover, Winifred Crock, Ken Jeffs, Matt Beazley, and Alicia Kulla-Branz lead the Central High School music team. "The most honorable part of this award (to us) is that it is a total department award," said Hoover. " We had to submit programs and recordings of all of the major ensembles. It recognizes everyone in the program." The selection process began last September when the GRAMMY Foundation mailed applications to more than 20,000 public high schools from across the country requesting information about the schools music programs. The field was then narrowed, and select schools were asked to submit additional documentation such as recordings of school concerts, sample concert programs and their music curriculum which was reviewed by an independent screening committee to determine the schools merit status. The GRAMMY Foundation is a nonprofit arm of the Recording Academy that is dedicated to advancing music and arts-based education across the country and ensuring access to Americas rich cultural legacy.
