Parkway Teachers Win Cash for Excellence in Teaching

Two Parkway math teachers were awarded cash prizes Tuesday at the St. Louis Science Center for recognition in excellence in teaching. South Middle teacher Ann Brenner took home $3,500 as first place awardee of the St. Louis Science Center/Carol B. and Jerome T. Loeb Prize for Excellence in Teaching Science & Mathematics, and North High teacher Phyllis Carter won $500 as one of three runners-up. The ceremony took place in the OMNIMAX® theater, with the seats packed full of cheering students from each of the five winners' schools. The Science Center paid for each school to bus 60 students and chaperones to the Science Center for the announcement, a screening of the OMNIMAX® film "Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon", and a tour of the science center. Brenner will also serve as a spokesperson at Science Center education events and will serve on the Teacher Partnership advisory board for the next year. The Loeb Prize rewards teachers who significantly enhance their students performances. Established in 1996 and endowed in 2002 by the Loebs gift, the prize honors effective teaching as a central component of quality education.
