Two Parkway students receive National Merit Achievement Scholarship

Two students from the Parkway School District are among more than 800 national winners of the National Achievement Scholarships.

The scholarship program, which recognizes outstanding African-American high school students, will award nearly $2 million in college funds this year. The award typically provides a one-time $2,500 payment toward academic costs.

The Parkway students are Anthonia R. Balogun from North High and Jennifer A. Mahan from Parkway South High.

More than 160,000 students entered the scholarship competition when they took the 2009 Preliminary SAT as high school juniors. Of those, about 1,600 were named as semifinalists. The finalists were then selected based on their academic record, the recommendation of school officials and a personal essay.
