Seven Parkway students named National Achievement semifinalists

Seven Parkway students were named as National Merit Scholarship Corporation National Achievement Scholarship semifinalists. The students are among 1,600 Black American high school seniors who will compete for Achievement Scholarship awards totaling more than $2.6 million, to be offered next spring.

The semifinalists were selected based on their 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) scores.

The list of Achievement semifinalists and their high schools are:

Central High
Alex Booker
Hiba Eltahir

North High School
Corrine C. Bell
Jennifer M. Wesley

South High School
Brian C. Lunceford

West High School
Jessica Battle
Lisa L. Haithcock

To advance to the finalist level in the competition, semifinalists must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the SAT/NMSQT performance. Also, the semifinalist and a high school official must complete a detailed scholarship application in which they provide information about the student’s participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and educational goals. The substantial amount of information collected about each finalist will be used in the selection of scholarship winners.
