Service Learning

Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

In response to the 2005 Social Studies Program Survey and Evaluation service learning has been added as a component of the Parkway Social Studies Curriculum in grades K – 12 in an effort to teach students the responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society.

Service learning in the K-12 Curriculum has a positive impact on academic achievement, civic engagement, and social and personal behavior. Detailed information on the impact of service learning in K-12 public schools is located on the website of The National Service-Learning Clearinghouse.
