Achievement, Belonging and Community
Henry Elementary School offers a strong educational program which is firmly anchored by an emphasis on family involvement, high expectations and the nurturing of individual strengths--all in a caring and supportive environment. Henry is a unique learning community where teachers continually model lessons for each other, study current research together and learn as a team.
Students are enriched and challenged. Communication skills-- reading, writing, speaking, and listening-- are developed through Writing Workshop, Reading Workshop, Word Study, Literature Studies, and Guided Reading. Other activities which promote high-level thinking skills are Chess Club, student leadership activities, Cross-Grade Level Student/Staff Family Days based on Character Education, communications classes, choir, after school classes, and the Invention Convention.
Students are recognized for their excellence in reading through a parent-coordinated Sir Henry Reading Program and recognitions for outstanding citizenship. Numerous vocal and instrumental musical performances promote individual talents and self-confidence.
Community, family and PTO support has enabled the school to expand student learning. Parents help coordinate science extension activities, Biography Day, a fourth grade Pioneer Day, student recognitions, and work closely with teachers and students during Writing Workshop activities.
