Hazardous Materials are commonly found in most homes. For instance chlorine bleach, alcohol, paint solvents lead-acid batteries and florescent light bulbs are probably in your home right now. Each of these materials is hazardous or contains a hazardous component. The lead-acid batteries contain both lead and acid as the name suggests and florescent light bulbs contain mercury. As a school district we must recycle these materials or dispose of them in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. Within the school district hazardous materials and hazardous waste come from everyday maintenance practices and classroom activities. Out of date and unused chemicals from science labs are properly disposed of as are paint solvents from our painting department. The following links give you information on the hazardous materials and hazardous waste practices in the District and general information on specific materials such as lead based paint: Lists of common hazardous chemicals Science laboratories and their chemicals Art/Industrial Art/Theater chemicals
