In 1986 the US government signed into law the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act which required the Environmental Protection Agency to promulgate rules regarding the inspection of all public and private school buildings and in 1987 the Asbestos-Containing materials in Schools Rule was proposed then finalized later that same year. Due to these rules, all school districts are required to identify potential asbestos containing materials within each school building, maintain it in good condition and remove or repair it should it become damaged. Parkway School District has conducted extensive asbestos inspections in each of its buildings except for its two newest schools, Oakbrook and Southwest Middle schools that were both built in the 1990’s and which we have received architects statements that no asbestos containing materials were specified in the construction of these buildings. Each building has on-site an Asbestos Management Plan that lists the asbestos containing materials found within the school and location maps that identify the locations of these materials. These asbestos Management Plans can also be found in the office of the Asbestos Designated Person, Juliette Travous, Manager of Environmental Services. The following links have information on asbestos within the school district as well as general information on asbestos materials.
