Parkway and Rockwood Receive $900,000 Grant to Teach American History

Parkway and Rockwood School Districts have teamed up to develop an enhanced American history curriculum with the help of a $903,883 grant from the U.S. Department of Education. "This grant allows us to use federal money to strengthen our American history curriculum," says Liz Morrison, coordinator of social studies for Parkway, who wrote the grant application. "Our goal is for students to develop a more in-depth understanding and keen interest in American history." The grant will be shared by both districts over the next three years to: 1. increase teacher knowledge of traditional American history, focusing on underdeveloped historical periods in fifth grade, eighth grade and high school; 2. create a culture of collaboration among American history teachers; and 3. craft powerful, significant and focused American history units in partnership with historians and historical institutions in an effort to increase student achievement, interest and engagement in American history and to encourage their growth as informed and productive American citizens.
