Six Parkway Students Receive Awards for Excellence in Research

Six Parkway high school students recently won 2005 Excellence in Research awards from the Pfizer-Solutia Students as Research Scientists (STARS) program. Moyang Li, Diane Ma, Todd Romkema, Cissy Yang and Jane Zhang of South High and Fatima Sabar of West High, were among 14 Parkway students and 40 other St. Louis area students who were accepted into the six-week STARS program this summer at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL). The STARS program pairs students and teachers with research mentors from UMSL, Saint Louis University and Washington University to experience various aspects of the scientific enterprise. To complete the program, each student must present a scholarly paper based on their research findings. All 54 research papers were assigned to a research category depending on the student's area of study. The behavioral science and life-science papers were reviewed by senior scientists from Pfizer and the computer science/mathematics, engineering, and physical science papers were reviewed by senior scientists from Solutia. The students whose papers were chosen for outsanding research were named winners of the Excellence in Research awards and will be presented with scholarships to UMSL.
