Parkway to Go Wireless in 2008-09

The Parkway Board of Education recently authorized implementation of a district-wide wireless environment. The goal is for all 29 Parkway schools and other buildings to have wireless Internet access by the time school starts in August 2008.*****

As more teachers and students have computers, it has become necessary to expand significantly on current network capabilities.

“It is more cost efficient in the long run to design all classrooms and sites to be wireless than to upgrade current infrastructure for wired access,” according to Steve VanMater, director of technology. Funding for the $600,000 wireless initiative is being provided by the 2004 bond issue.

Wireless access will be piloted this winter, beginning at South High School and continuing to Shenandoah Elementary and Northeast Middle School.

Parents, Prepare for School Closings!

It’s getting to be that season again. In addition to winter weather, emergencies can also occur during the school day.  Parents, please ensure you have a plan in place outlining each family member’s responsibility during an emergency school closing, and be sure to review it with your child.*****

New in 2007-08:  Parkway parents will receive an AlertNow recorded phone message when school is closed due to weather or unforeseen emergencies. If the closing occurs late at night or very early morning, only home telephone numbers will be called. If school closes during the day, parents’ cell and work numbers will be called as well.

Reminder:  When listening to a message, you can re-start the recording from the beginning by pressing any number on the phone keypad.  Be sure to keep your school informed of any phone number changes throughout the year.

In addition to the recorded phone messages, the traditional sources of closing information will continue to be available.

Parkway Students Earn Half of State Writing Awards

Nine Parkway students garnered half of the 18 awards given in the state of Missouri for Achievement in Writing by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Students representing each of Parkway’s four traditional high schools received the award.*****

Central High Brianna Coppersmith, David Levary
North High - Kathleen Beilsmith, Vanessa Catalanotto, Michelle Kreter
South High - Kelly Doyle, Amber Mohrmann
West High - Stephanie Connolly, Wendy Wang

These students were among 595 high school seniors chosen from across the United States, the District of Columbia, Canada, the Virgin Islands and American schools abroad.

This award program was established in 1957 to encourage high school students in their writing and to recognize publicly some of the best student writers in the nation.

The writing excellence is based on students' samples of their own best prose or verse and on impromptu themes that are written under supervision. For more details, visit the NCTE Web site at http://www.ncte.org/about/awards/student/aa.
