Parkway's Proposition R on November 7 BallotParkway has a tax rate increase proposal on the Nov. 7, 2006 ballot. Titled Proposition R, the 37-cent rate increase would allow the district to lower class sizes, improve academic achievement and update textbooks, technology and classroom equipment. According to St. Louis County data, the new rate would cost the median Parkway homeowner $140 per year - about $12 per month. Parkway Alumni Association Hall of FameNationally known artists, Washington insiders, scientific trailblazers and successful entrepreneurs are among the 20 new inductees into the Parkway Alumni Hall of Fame for 2006. The honorees will be feted at an awards dinner hosted by the Parkway Alumni Association at the Sheraton Westport Plaza Hotel on Saturday, Nov. 11. For ticket information call (314) 415-8074. All recipients of the Hall of Fame award were selected based exclusively on their achievements and contributions to their profession and their community. No limit is placed on the number of awards given each year, and a selection committee approved by the association's board of directors implements the process. This is the second time the PAA has held the hall of fame event. "We are excited by the caliber of people Parkway schools produce," notes Jan Misuraca, the association's executive director. "The community should know that these people are a reflection of what Parkway is and has always been - a place where children are given strong academic preparation for whatever they choose to do, as well as a place that will care for and support them emotionally. It's also an institution that deserves its constituents' continuing support so that future generations will be equally prepared and will find ways to be assets in our society." The inductees are: Thomas Barthold, West '71; Kathy Beauchamp, M.D., West '79; Thom Dunning, Parkway '61; James Forsen, M.D. West '79; Steve Friedman, North '76; Robin (Robins) Frisella, West '79; Don Goldman, Central '72; John Hendrix, South '94; Ron Hutcheson, Central '72; Michael Katz, Central '81; Susan Lordi Marker, Central '72; Kevin Lee Milligan, West '73; Martin Perry, Central '68; Valerie Ratts, M.D., West '79; Joel Shanker, Central '90; Richard Smith, West '78; Douglas Towns, South '85; Dave Wilkinson, Central '80; and Kathy (Higdon) Wilson, Central '69 (posthumously). Parkway Students Go to the "Polls" on Nov. 7This year, all Parkway students will be participating in Kids Voting Missouri - the national, non-partisan youth voter education program that teaches young people about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship - especially the right to vote. Through special classroom projects, teachers have provided training in the direct voting process, educating students about the rights and responsibilities of voting, and helping students acquire and use the thinking skills needed to be informed. Students will then go to their own school's Kids Voting polls on election day to cast ballots on some of the same candidates and issues as adult voters. Parent volunteers will be helping with the voting process at each school. In addition, student volunteers will work at the polls as part of the Junior Poll Workers program. All ballots will be delivered in sealed envelopes to the St. Louis Kids Voting headquarters at the University of Missouri-St. Louis for scanning and tabulation. Parents can get more information on Kids Voting activities, lessons and Parkway's sample ballot, and after the election view results by school at http://www.kidsvotingmissouri.org. Results will begin to be posted online after 9 p.m. on Nov. 7. Kids Voting Missouri is administered by the College of Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
