Welcome to our orchestra program! This program is a vital part of the Parkway School District curriculum. In third grade all students learn to play the violin. Instruments are provided by the school and students attend class twice a week for 30 minutes. Instruction is based on the philosophy of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki who believed that all students can learn by providing a strong foundation of listening, rote learning, repetition and mastery.
The fourth and fifth grade strings program in Parkway is an optional program for those students who choose to further develop their instrumental musical skills. These students may choose to play the violin, viola, cello and in some cases, the bass. Children are required to provide their own instrument and supplies in fourth and fifth grade. Classes also meet twice a week,
The Parkway strings program has one of the highest enrollments in the St. Louis area as well as in the state of Missouri. Brain research has shown a direct correlation between string instrument instruction and enhanced higher brain function. We are very fortunate to be able to offer such a unique program at our school.
I feel very privileged to be working within this amazing program. It's very exciting to help children realize their musical potential!
