A Note from the Principal
Dear Families,
Happy Spring! I know it is a few days early, but I am seeing some flowers start to pop up. It is staying lighter longer and my calendar is also telling me we only have a couple of weeks until spring break. We have so much to look forward to this spring.
Our students have been working hard all year long and soon our third, fourth, and fifth grade students will get to show how much they know. MAP testing will begin the second week of April. Please keep this important testing window(April 10-20) in mind when scheduling appointments. We need all of our students here every day and especially during the testing window. A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast also help to get those testing days off to the right start. This year our Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goal is to have 83.7% of students score proficient or higher in communication arts and 81.7% in math. This is a lofty goal but quite possible. If you are curious about the types of questions that are on the MAP, you can visit the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education website: http://dese.mo.gov/divimprove/assess/Released_Items/riarchiveindex.html and look at the “released items”. Parkway common assessments have a similar format, so our students should be prepared.
On a much lighter note, Barretts students will be treated to a “Doin it Right” assembly sponsored by the St. Louis Cardinals and Fox Midwest Sports on March 15. Students in grades K-2 will have an assembly at 1:00 and students in grades 3-5 will have an assembly at 2:00. The message is one about making good choices, staying away from drugs, and staying healthy by being actively involved in sports and positive activities. Fredbird will be in attendance! We are asking all students and staff to come to school completely decked out in St. Louis Cardinals spirit wear and/or red. We will be rolling out the RED carpet and giving our guests a warm Barretts welcome.
Dr. Seuss has celebrated another birthday. If you haven’t read a good Seuss book lately, you really should. Here are a couple of quotes to share with your children.
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...”
Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You'll Go!
“There's no limit to how much you'll know, depending how far beyond zebra you go.”
Dr. Seuss
Have a terrific start to SPRING!
Sincerely,
Dr. Kelli Moreton
