A log structure known as the Breen School was located on the present Barretts School location. That school burned down and a one-room brick schoolhouse was built in 1895 and used until the late 1930's. In the 1800s, J.R. Barretts and his wife sold part of their land in that area to the Missouri Pacific Railroad. The school was named for the popular Barretts Station.
Barretts has been serving students and their families as a continuous site for learning since 1895. It is the original of Parkway's 28 schools. Additions to the school in the late 1930's, mid-1950's and late 1980's have brought the school to its current structure.
The Barretts community has a strong tradition of caring for each child while setting high standards for learning and achievement. Students are actively engaged in learning throughout the day, as well as participating in extracurricular activities such as Honors Choir, Honors Orchestra, Student Leadership Committee, after-school clubs and Scouting.
An exceptional partnership exists between the parents and teachers of Barretts. One of the many opportunities for parent involvement include grade level programs such as Nature Walks, Fishing Day, Missouri Day, E2 (Environmental Experience) Day and Jefferson City trip. Parents serve as tutors, mentors and collaborators in planning special events. Parents volunteer to serve on the PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) as well as help in the school library and assist with building organization. Each year on "Spotlight Night," students participate in fun and engaging activities that highlight a particular aspect of the curriculum. The Barretts PTO has raised and donated funds to provide students with a well-equipped science lab, playground equipment, an extensive library renovation and has offered financial support of Parkway's technology goal by providing state of the art technology equipment to support curriculum and enhance teaching strategies in the classrooms.
Barretts is committed to providing an environment where all children can thrive academically, develop the skills and knowledge to be responsible citizens and respect and appreciate the uniqueness of each other.
