GED stands for General Educational Development.

2.  Why should I bother to take the GED Tests?

By taking the GED Tests you get a high school equivalency certificate, which is recognized by the military, community  colleges, universities, and employers.

3.  Who can take the GED Tests?

Anyone who is at least 17 years old, is not enrolled in high school and has not graduated from high school.

4.  If I am 16 or 17 and have quit school, do I have to do anything special before I take classes or take the GED Tests?

If you are 16 years old, you must have 16 hours of high school credit, a letter from your principal stating that you have these credits, are no longer enrolled in high school and have permission to take GED classes. If you are 17 years old, you don't have to do anything special. Just call the office at (314) 415-4941 to enroll.

5.  Does Parkway Adult Education and Literacy give the GED Tests?

No, you must apply for the test through the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Jefferson City.

6.  How do I apply?

We recommend taking GED preparation classes, where a GED practice test is given.  If you are certain you are ready for the GED Tests, you do not need classes.  Just send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to us at Parkway Adult Education and Literacy, 13157 N. Olive Spur Road, Creve Coeur, MO 63141 and we will send you an application, or download it from the web at: http://www.ged.mo.gov

7.  Can I take the GED Tests here in St. Louis?

Yes, there are testing sites here in St. Louis. After you apply, the state will send you information about how and where to set up an actual testing time.

8.  Can I take the GED Tests right away?

Usually there is a one to two month waiting period to take the GED Tests locally.

9.  Is there a charge for the GED Tests?

Yes, there is an application fee of $20 as well as a sitting fee of $20.

10.  What areas are tested on the GED Tests?

Language Arts/Writing (including writing an essay), Social Studies, Science, Language Arts/Reading and Mathematics are included on the GED Tests.

11.  Do I have to know how to use a calculator?

Yes, you must be able to use the Casio FX260 solar calculator, which is the only calculator approved for use with the test.  You will have practice time with the calculator prior to the test. It will be provided where you take the test.

12.  How long are the GED Tests?

The GED Tests take approximately 8 hours.

13.  How do I know if I am ready to take the GED Tests?

Just enroll in one of our classes, take our preliminary tests, and we can give you an idea how close you are to being ready to pass the GED Tests.

14.  What if my tests show that I am not ready to pass the GED Tests?

The teacher at your site will design a study plan just for you with your needs in mind. You will work on lessons designed to help you learn everything you need to know in order to pass the GED Tests.

16.  Is there a charge for your classes?

No, our classes are free.  Books and materials are available for students to use in the classroom.

17.  Can anyone go to your classes, no matter where they live?

Yes, anyone can attend our classes.

18.  I am older and I quit school a long time ago. Can I come to your classes?

Yes, everyone is welcome to come to our GED preparation classes.

19.  After I have been in class, will there be a chance to take a GED official practice test?

Yes, when your teacher determines that you are ready, you can take a GED official practice test in class.

20.  My reading and math skills are very, very low. Can I still come to your classes?

Yes, our classes also help students with basic skills.

21.  I graduated from high school. I don’t need to take the GED Tests, but my basic skills are still poor. Can I come to class?

Yes, we welcome anyone who wants to brush up on basic skills.

22.  I know that I need your classes, but I’m nervous about starting something so new and different. Can I talk to someone about your classes?

Yes, just call Parkway Adult Education and Literacy at 314-415-4940 and we will be glad to answer any other questions that you may have.
